Matthew Warchus was born on October 24, 1966 in Rochester, Kent, England. He is a director and writer, known for Pride (2014), Simpatico (1999) and Matilda .

He was nominated for a 1998 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Director of the 1997 season for "Hamlet" at the Royal Shakespeare Company's Barbican Theatre. He was nominated for a 1997 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Director of 1996 for "ART". He was awarded the 1995 London Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Director for Volpone and Henry V. Has twice been nominated for Broadway's Tony Award as Best Director (Play): in 1998 for Yasmina Reza 's "Art," and in 2000 for a revival of Sam Shepard 's "True West." He was awarded the 2009 Tony Award for Director of a Play for "God of Carnage" on Broadway in New York City. He was nominated for a 2009 Tony Award for Director of a Play for "The Norman Conquests" on Broadway in New York City. He and novelist/screenwriter David Nicholls were classmates at Bristol University.
